CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The viewing chamber Arianne mentioned appeared to be more of a viewing floor, since it took up an entire level of the massive library.

Various colors of different shimmering portals flared on the viewing chamber's walls. Above each of the portals was a scrawled number that I assumed indicated which floor that portal led to.

A simple railing lay between the viewing chamber and what appeared to be a fifty foot drop into the sandy pit below.

The simple wrought iron railing protected any onlooker from inadvertently taking a painful and possibly fatal tumble into the arena below.

But that was all that prevented it.

A good number of tables were set in the middle the winding circular floor, many with small lamps on them that would allow both viewing and reading to occur simultaneously.

“Here you go!” Arianne said happily as she pointed at a table near the viewing glass. “That’s the perfect spot.”

And with that, she raced over to the empty table and pulled out a chair for me. I couldn’t help but chuckle that, although I’d already let her know I didn’t need as much help as she wanted to give me, she still did her best.

“Thanks Arianne,” I said as I placed the pile of books on the table and took a seat. “You want to watch with me?”

I indicated the chair next to mine, and the girl’s eyes went wide with amazement.

“Really?” she asked quickly. “I mean, I’m supposed to be the librarian’s assistant. So I really should go back up now…”

Despite her words, I could easily tell that she wanted nothing more than to see the fight. I patted the chair’s back and grinned mischievously.

“If she asks, I can just say that I needed to discuss certain ideas with you,” I said while shooting her a conspiratorial wink. “Plus, I might have to anyway, so it’s not really lying right?”

“O—Okay!” Arianne said brightly as she took the seat.

The only problem with helping the little girl out of that pickle was that she immediately started doing what every kid who’s just been asked to sit still does: she started fidgeting. With another chuckle, I did my best to ignore it and focus on my reading.

This only proved more difficult as the next few minutes wore on, however, since news of the duel had clearly gotten around. Although the room had only been sparsely populated when we entered, it was starting to fill up fast with beastkin of all manner of appearance.

Wolf ears twitched eagerly while fox tails swished in the air behind their owners. Some unidentifiable smudges on the top of a teenage beastkin's head left me unsure about what animal she was closest to, until she turned to confer with a friend and I caught a white splay of tail feathers sticking out just above her tailbone.

The noise of murmured conversations soon overwhelmed the room, and I gave my head a shake. I looked around and realized that there was a wide open area nearest the windows and had an idea.
